The Ultimate Indulgence Islam, the national religion, puts great emphasis on cleanliness, and the Turkish Bath, known as " Hamam ", has been part of Turkey's culture for centuries. These have descended from the Roman Bath and were adopted by the Byzantines and later by the Ottomans. If you decide to visit any of these historic bath-houses, you will step back in time and experience a wonderfully sensuous ritual, quite different from a bubble bath or a quick shower at home. Whether you go to one of the newer Turkish Baths in the bigger hotels or the traditional ones in town, the services to expect shoud be the same. After entering the hamam and leaving your clothing in a locker, you procede wrapped in a cloth towel to the "Göbektaşı". This is a hot steamy room in the middle of which a large heated marble slab is waiting for you to have an invigorating soapy massage with a drying and re-dressing. You will leave the wonderful feeling of renewed energy from the increased blood circulation and elimination of all the harmful toxins from your body.

As a bonus, many of the old marble baths are very interesting architecturally. Traditionally, in towns there are often separate hamams for men and women, while in some men and women can bath together. |
